Brand New Animal (BNA) is an action and fantasy anime by Kakuzi Nakashima. The anime was created by Studio Trigger, a Japanese animation studio known for its beloved anime series, the Little Witch Academia. The series was first broadcast on April 8, 2020, and its” Runaway Raccoon” episode aired on Netflix.
The series is not an adaptation of a manga or light novel, but Kakuza originally wrote the script for the anime. The 12th episode of BNA was Anima City, which was the last of the first season. BNA was rated as one of the best anime series released in 2020 on Netflix.
Its fans were left wondering whether or not the anime would be renewed and when the release date of the new season would be. Read on to find out.
What is the Plotline of the Anime?
The series story takes place in the 21st Century, a period when anthropomorphic animals (like humans) haven’t been seen in the world before. The Beastmen suddenly come to light. When Michiru Kagemori, an ordinary high school student, turns into a Beastman, he gets in trouble with monster hunters. He travels to the city of Anima, where monsters like himself live in peace.
Michiru meets a wolf Beastman called Shirou Ogami, and they set to uncover the secret behind their transformation. The two set to uncover the mystery behind the sudden event and the deep secrets behind Anima city’s origin.
Will There Be Season 2 of BNA?
As of June 2022, neither Netflix nor any company related to the anime has released any news about the series renewal. Since it was one of the most successful animes of 2020 on Netflix, the possibility of a second season is still there. There hasn’t been cancellation news as well.
It isn’t known if the studio is working on a sequel, but it all levels to its financial status. However, the finance topic has been hushed, and eyes have been turned to Netflix for an expected statement.
Disc Sales and Popularity of BNA
For an anime to be popular in Japan, its disc sale status is necessary. BNA sold 436 discs on average and ranked 86th out of the 109 animes on sale in the same period. However, recently there has been a global decline in disc sales due to digitalization. An anime is expected to sell 4,000 copies to get a new season confirmation. The anime may have gained global popularity on Netflix, but it’s underrated in Japan.
Additionally, the anime’s Twitter in Japan has 37k followers, a low blow since it requires a threshold of +100k followers. Another downfall is its 621st popularity rank on Myanimelist. Finally, BNA has a 68% popularity on Google searches.
Since the anime is not a manga adaptation, source materials are not a major factor for a new season. So, popularity remains the main determinant of the second season. The fact that Netflix hasn’t announced its cancellation increases the chances of a continuation of BNA. Since it takes about one year to prepare an average anime series, we hope a second season could be released somewhere in 2023.
