What Timber Do You Need?

When building a wooden shed bar, the types of wood to use are quite a number. For this particular DIY backyard bar, you should use 38mm x 63mm CLS for the base (above) and anywhere that states CLS in the plans. For the rest of the framework, the material and measurements are similar, just that they are ripped in half.

If you do not have near you a table saw to rip them down, then you can look for 38mm x 40mmm or 30mm x 30mm studs for spars. Once you have identified what timber you will be using as spars, then you should count them all on the plans to get an idea of how many lengths.

After that, you can source your tongue and groove, or similar cladding. Also you should only buy what you think you need and then return what is not useful in this project.

It is good to note also, you are free to get a bit crafty with the roof using only offcuts in order to save money. This will be discussed further later on!

How To Build The Shed Base

Following the following steps, evenly position your spars for your base. A few tips to guide you include:

  1. Hold the two longest lengths you have together, measure and then mark them at the same time
  2. Ensure that each spar runs in the opposite way to see if any of them is bowing. If they are bowing, put them in such a way that they face them upwards
  3. Pre-drill and screw everything together
  4. Check to see if there is a square by holding a tape measure in a diagonal manner just to make sure that they match perfectly
  5. If they are not matching as they should, knock the larger measurement with a hammer until it is in an even position
  6. Keep the structure square by nailing mitered corner offcuts in each and every one of the corners

How To Treat A Shed Base

If you are able to use pressure treated CLS, then it becomes an added advantage. But keep in mind that all of the cuts you make will still need to be treated.

Wood is quite costly right now; this is why there is an option for you to use standard CLS and treated with a color changing preservative. It begins in a blue shade and then when it is dried it changes to a green shade.

The most important tip here would be to use only that stain that is indicated to contain preservatives. Otherwise, it’s just colored water that will not yield the results that are expected at this point.

What Should You Line Your Shed Base With?

Once you have ensured that the framework is completely dry, you can then proceed to line your shed base. This however, is completely up to you to decide.

It is recommended to use tongue and groove as it is much cheaper in the market. You also have the option of using pallet wood, for as long as you leave enough overhang on your shed panel’s cladding that will allow you to cover the thickness of what you use.

How To Plan The Size Of Your Shed’s Panels

The most important thing is for you to determine the size of your shed’s base and build that as the first structure. Once you know what you are working with, you can then figure out the size that you will need for your panels to be.

The next important aspect you need to consider is which side of the shed you would want your trims to be visible. The side that you choose is important since it will determine the length of your panels. For instance when building a drinks shed, flashings may to be at the front side. Reason being, the two side’s panel’s ends are the ones that have chosen to be exposed. Using an offcut of the same studwork you can also use; hold about ¼ inch off the edge and draw along it. Then do the same to the opposite side to create a corner.

Also, ¼” set back will give you some allowance when you get to the point of screwing the whole shed together. Make sure not to make it too tight. Once you have drawn all these measurements in each one of the 4 corners, you now know exactly how long your spars need to be. You do not even need a tape measure if you are able to hold your timber up against them.

How To Build The Shed’s Framework

To start building your framework, you should have a squared base. Therefore, to save yourself from checking each frame as you go, you can toenail two sides in an L shape, in line with the base.

You can also use a similar framework screw up as the base, but you can also start with the back panel. Toenail the next one on top to the bottom and then screw it together, too.

Cladding A Shed

There is an option of cladding your shed using different types of wood; ranging from sheet material, to lap panels. For example, you can clad a football team shed with tongue and groove. However, tongue and groove may be difficult to get, or more expensive. This does not mean you cannot use it; you would just need to be resourceful and sort through the best bits to be the most visible. Use an overhung at the bottom to clad and then create a skirting around the base and try to prevent water from moving in.

How To Build A Shed Door

The next step is to make a wooden shed door from scratch. Here are a few tips on how to do it. To get the measurements, determine the easiest way to find out the door framework in a way that you can temporarily nail 4 trims to the door opening. You have to have 2 for the door and then 2 for the opening. You have to also measure the width you have left and deduct 12mm clearance especially if you are using flush hinges. You should use 15mm for outside hinges. That should be the width of both the top and the bottom.

How To Install A Shed Window

First of all, building a shed with windows is completely up to you to decide if you want it. It is recommended that you source your glass window before building your shed’s framework so as to save yourself money. It is also important to note that building around it and buying an exact size will probably cost you a lot more money.

How To Bolt The Shed Together

After building all the pieces of your shed, place it and anchor it on a concrete base. After placing it on the base, bolt all the panels together and then screw them to the base and the roof. You can shelves if you want to.

Conclusion

The following is a guide to help make the process of building a wooden shed bar easier. Have fun!
