La Reina del Sur or translated as The Queen of the South is a Spanish crime drama that is full-packed with a kickass female protagonist and a mixture of the chronicles of Mexican women.
The first season premiered on February 28, 2011, and it gets better every release. With a huge budget of $10 million, the show was considered to be one of the most expensive telenovelas ever produced by Telemundo.
Eight years later, La Reina del Sur has been renewed for another season which premiered on April 22, 2019.
The creators and producers took long enough to prepare for its release but fans were still waiting and anticipating it to the point where the moment the show premiered, it took over the ranks as the most viewed Spanish TV series in no time.
In July 2020, Telemundo announced that this powerful Spanish series led by a young Mexican woman named Teresa Mendoza is coming back on screens after that cliffhanger ending from the second season.
The Plot

The series is based on a kickass young female Mexican protagonist named Teresa Mendoza who becomes one of the most renowned names in the world of international drug trafficking over the learnings she got from her obscene business sense and endeavors.
Because of the heartbreak, she felt from losing her boyfriend, and with the hopes of not having to end the same fate with him, she fled and eventually reached the southern part of Spain. She tried to start afresh but still ended up losing a loved one.
That’s the time she decided to put an end on being the victim of someone else’s bad doings and started her very own drug trafficking business. Having a wide array of connections and great business skills, Teresa became renowned in her field internationally.
La Reina del Sur Casts
Like any other series, La Reina del Sur stars Kate del Castillo who portrays the image of the kickass protagonist Mexican woman named Teresa Mendoza.
Other notable casts and characters in the show include the major antagonist of the show, Humberto Zurita, head of the Sinaloa Cartel who played the character of Epifano Vargas; Raoul Bova as Francesco Lupo Belmondo who was Teresa’s love interest.

La Reina del Sur was created by Roberto Stopello as written by Juan Marcos Blanco, Valentina Parraga alongside director/showrunner Mauricio Cruz and Walter Doehner.
Under the production of Telemundo, Antena 3, and RTI Producciones, the first season premiered on February 28, 2011. After almost 8 years, the series returned with its second season, and this time it is co-produced with Telemundo Global Studios and Netflix.

Following how the preceding season ended, we saw Teresa seeking revenge for a daughter’s kidnapping and was forced to stay in solitary under the US Federal Witness Protection Program concealing her identity.
But soon revealed that someone was fully aware of her whereabouts and the name Maria Dantes that she has been using which every fan hopes to see how it will affect or threaten Teresa and her daughter Sofia’s safety.
La Reina Del Sur Season 3 Release Date
After the massive attention and response to La Reina del Sur Season 2 which premiered on April 22, 2019, fans are so eager about how the stories will unfold this time in the next season.
Apparently, there is no update on the release date of season 3 yet. But it would not be wrong to expect that familiar faces will return soon enough.
