The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Extends 398 Invitations
The prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has recently announced the extension of 398 invitations to artists and executives, inviting them to become members of the organization. This diverse group includes actors, directors, producers, cinematographers, writers, and sound engineers hailing from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay. They have all made significant contributions to the world of motion pictures.
Celebrating Latino Talent
Among the talented individuals invited are esteemed Latino actors Raúl Castillo, A Martinez, and Rosa Salazar. Raúl Castillo has showcased his exceptional skills in notable productions such as “Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “The Inspection.” A Martinez, known for his remarkable performances in “Ambulance” and “Powwow Highway,” is also recognized for his outstanding contributions. Additionally, Rosa Salazar, celebrated for her roles in “Alita: Battle Angel” and “The Kindergarten Teacher,” has earned her well-deserved invitation.
Acclaimed Directors from the Latino and Latin American Film Industry
This year’s list also features a remarkable group of Latino and Latin American directors who have left an indelible mark on the industry. Notable names include Santiago Mitre, whose Golden Globe-winning film “Argentina, 1985” received an Oscar nomination, and Abner Benaim, whose movie “Plaza Catedral” made the shortlist for the 2022 Oscars. Furthermore, the Academy invited directors Antonio Campos, Francisco Lombardi, Carlos López Estrada, and Anita Rocha da Silveira for their exceptional contributions.
Recognizing Excellence in Other Fields
In addition to actors and directors, the Academy also acknowledged professionals in various other categories. The list includes cinematographer María Secco, documentarian Andrés Di Tella, producer Daniel Birman Ripstein, writers Alejandro Fernández Almendras and Mariano Llinás, sound designers and mixers Lena Esquenazi, Anthony Ortiz, and Javier Angel Umpierrez, visual effects artist Gino Acevedo, and makeup artist designer Alfredo Mora.

The 2023 class of invitees to the Academy represents a diverse and accomplished group. Among them, 40% identify as women, 34% come from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities, and 52% represent 50 countries and territories outside the United States. This class boasts an impressive 76 Oscar® nominees, including 22 winners.
