Early Life and Family Background
On April 21, 1951, Danza was born in Brooklyn, New York. His mother worked as a bookkeeper, and his father as a garbage collector. Danza’s mother was an immigrant from the village of Campobello di Mazara in the Sicilian province of Trapani, while his paternal grandparents were natives of Pietrelcina, Benevento, Campania, Italy. Matty Jr., his younger brother, runs a restaurant in Los Angeles. When he was 14, his family moved from East New York, Brooklyn, to Malverne, New York, on Long Island.

Danza graduated from Malverne Senior High School in 1968. He calls himself a “poor student” in high school in the first episode of his television series Teach: Tony Danza. He received a wrestling scholarship to attend the University of Dubuque, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1972.
Career as a Boxer
Danza was a professional boxer with a record of nine wins and three defeats (nine knockouts—seven of which came in the first round—and three technical knockouts). All but one of his matches ended in knockouts. He entered the 1975 New York City Golden Gloves as a prank by his friends. Danza lost the match after eliminating all six opponents in the first round.
Acting Career
Danza was found by a producer at a boxing center in New York soon after receiving his degree from the University of Dubuque. After that, he was cast as a taxi driver on the television series Taxi, and he later appeared as Tony Micelli on Who’s the Boss? In the movie “Angels in the Outfield,” Danza also portrays the role of baseball player Mel Clark.
Teaching Career
Danza co-taught an English class for the 10th grade at Northeast High School in Philadelphia while appearing in the A&E reality series “Teach: Tony Danza” during his academic year. On October 1, 2010, it formally launched. His first year of teaching at Northeast High served as the basis for the 2012 publication of “I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had: My Year as a Rookie Teacher at Northeast High.”
