Fans of the hit anime will be happy to know that season 4 is coming. However, with the coronavirus pandemic, the release date seems to take longer than the first three seasons.

COVID-19 ravaged the entire globe and wreaked havoc on the entertainment industry. So if you’re wondering why the release date on some of your favorite shows got delayed, it’s because of this ongoing global health crisis.

About Sword Art Online

‘Sword Art Online’ is a Japanese light-novel-turned-anime series written by author Reki Kawahara.

The series takes place in an augmented reality game set soon. The entirety of the series follows protagonists Kirito and Asuna as they play through various worlds and stages of the game.

Sword Art Online is set in 2022. It’s a virtual reality massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). To play the game, players need to use the ‘NerveGear.’, a helmet that stimulates the player’s five senses.

With the NerveGear, players can control and experience their in-game character as if they are inside the actual game. However, that’s where the problem lies as the players get stuck inside the game forever. The only way of returning to reality is for them to play and win the game.

Kawahara originally wrote the series on his website from 2002 to 2008. Later, the light novels began publication on April 10, 2009. It didn’t take long for the series to catch attention and popularity. Its growing fame earned it a spin-off series that was produced in October 2012.

Sword Art Online: Other Iterations

Apart from the anime series, there’s also an animated film titled ‘Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale.’ It premiered in Japan on February 18, 2017. It was later released in the United States on March 9, 2017, with an English dub.

‘Sword Art Online’ also has a spin-off anime series titled ‘Alternative Gun Gale Online’ that premiered in 2018. The 4th season entitled ‘Sword Art Online: Progressive’ was supposedly set to release in 2021. However, with no new updates, the release would be set back for either 2022 or 2023.

Netflix has also confirmed that it will produce a live-action series based on the anime. In addition, ‘Sword Art Online’ also has influence in the gaming community. The title produced six video games for multiple consoles.

Sword Art Online Season 4: Cast

As of right now, the cast for ‘Sword Art Online’ Season 4 is yet to be announced. After all, we don’t have updates as to whether or not the show is in the making.

The producers have yet to make the big announcement. So whatever news you get from the internet, make sure to take it with a grain of salt.

Despite no confirmations about casting, we can expect some familiar names to reprise their roles in the hit anime series. Expect the following people to make their voice heard for season 4:

  • Yoshitugu Matouka (Kirito)
  • Haruka Tomatsu (Asuna)
  • Nobunaga Shimazaki (Eugeo)
  • Ai Kayano (Alice Schuberg)

Other than the ones mentioned, no other names are set in stone for ‘Sword Art Online’ Season 4. However, we can expect the producers to drop the full cast in the coming months.

Sword Art Online Season 4: Plot

‘Sword Art Online’ is a unique game that integrates with augmented reality. In the story, numerous players join the game.

However, every player gets trapped when they realize that there isn’t an option for quitting or pausing. What’s worse is that force-quitting the game will result in real-life death.

To return to the real world, players need to fight through and complete the game. This arrangement is the reason why ‘Sword Art Online’ is so popular. Its uniqueness is what gets viewers hooked.

The storyline is also interesting, with a mix of well-loved characters that complement each other. With no new updates, the plot for ‘Sword Art Online’ season 4 is still unknown.

All we have right now are rumored spoilers coming from reliable sources. According to one source, Alice is in danger and needs help.

It’s also rumored that Kirito will attempt to unite the good guys in preparation to fight for the baddies. Easier said than done as none of them trust each other. But that’s what needs to be done for them to stand a chance against a common enemy.

Sword Art Online Season 4: Will there be a season 5?

While season 4 is yet to be released, many fans are already speculating about the 5th season. According to recent updates, creator Reki Kawahara started creating content for the new story arc. He claims that it will probably take a few more years to finish creating enough content for an entirely new season.

We made some predictions of our own by counting the number of volumes that he releases per season. In the previous seasons, Kawahara was able to produce ten volumes. That means if he isn’t able to publish at least ten before the end of 2021, we can expect confirmation of a 5th season in either 202 or 2023.

Sword Art Online Season 4: Release Date

The 4th installment of ‘Sword Art Online’ was initially expected to release around mid-October 2020.

But with that already past and still no season 4, fans are left wondering when the new release date will be. The reason is due to the ongoing global crisis that is the coronavirus pandemic.

Some speculate it to be early to mid-2022 or early 2023. But with no new updates regarding its release, we’ll have to wait and hope for the best. Stay tuned for more ‘Sword Art Online’ updates in the coming months.
