Early Life
Lаmаr Оdоm wаѕ bоrn on November 6, 1979, in South Jamaica, Queens, New York City tо parents Јое Оdоm, alleged drug еnthuѕіаѕt and Саthу Меrсеr who passed away fighting cancer.
Odom was raised by his maternal grandmother, a nurse who had raised five children and subsequently studied to earn her degree in 1980 at the age of 56. As a child, he did not do well with his studies however, doing sports or playing games made him feel different. Odom was not able to finish his studies due to having poor grades.
In 1997, Odom started exploring his options in life, one of them being basketball. He was named as the Parade Player of the Year, USA Today All-USC First Team, and Parade All-American First Team. Soon after, he was offered a scholarship by the University of Nevada Las Vegas but was forfeited when there were questions about his grades along with his arrest for soliciting prostitution.
Instead, he attended the University of Rhode Island and played one season before trying for the NBA Draft.
