Odom was raised by his maternal grandmother, a nurse who had raised five children and subsequently studied to earn her degree in 1980 at the age of 56. As a child, he did not do well with his studies however, doing sports or playing games made him feel different. Odom was not able to finish his studies due to having poor grades.
In 1997, Odom started exploring his options in life, one of them being basketball. He was named as the Parade Player of the Year, USA Today All-USC First Team, and Parade All-American First Team.
