His parents were Ethiopian migrants. His father Makkonen Tesfaye and mother Samra Tesfaye brought him up in Scarborough, Toronto. They divorced each other when he was a kid and Abel and his mother started living with his grandmother. 

While staying with his mother and grandmother, he learned Amharic and would converse with his mother in the same language. He was sent to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church where he offered his services. His father was absent from the most crucial years of his childhood.
