If Cairns is on top of your bucket list for your family holiday, we’re sure you’re in for a memorable escapade. How do we know? Well, we’ve been there so many times and you could say that we’ve become quite the expert when it comes to the local tourism there.
To prove this, we’ve whipped up our list of the top places your family will surely enjoy in Cairns. Visit one of these attractions and dare tell us that we’re wrong!
Cairns Esplanade
Let’s start at the very heart of Cairns, which is the Cairns Esplanade. The place is filled with walkways and boardwalks where the family can stroll around while marvelling at the blue ocean and lush vegetations in the area. Your kids can also bring their skateboards, rollerblades, or bikes if walking bores them too much.
If you have toddlers in the family, let them play at the Muddy’s Playground! It’s one of the best places where your preschoolers can spend their youthful energy.
Mum and Dad, you can also check out the free fitness classes there. There are Zumba classes, Aqua Aerobics and “Mumbalates”, too! Perfect if you’re planning to trim some fats.
Esplanade Lagoon
Adjacent to the Cairns Esplanade is a massive man-made lagoon where the little ones can paddle through the water. The lagoon is only 1.5 meter deep so make sure to always watch the kids. It’s free and always open for everyone!
Tjapukai Aboriginal Culture Park
If you want to immerse your kids early on in the culture of the indigenous people, this is the best place! And parents, it’s not too late to catch up with history, too!
The whole family can learn the Tjapukai culture which includes boomerang and spear throwing, cooking with bush plants and more! The culture park is just 15 minutes from Central Cairns and it’s easy to find!
Fitzroy Island
Fitzroy Island is a paradise just 45 minutes from Cairns. You’ll reach the island via a relaxing cruise, which every family member will certainly enjoy.
Once you’ve reached the destination, a ton of activities await the family. You can explore the hiking trails that weave through the lush vegetations of the island or set up a picnic blanket while the kids build sandcastles by the shore.
If you want to see some turtles up close and personal, you can visit the turtle rehabilitation centre on Fitzroy Island. It’s also a great way to teach your children to take care of the environment and our friendly neighbours from the wild.
The Great Barrier Reef
If you plan to go to Fitzroy Island, might as well explore the Great Barrier Reef! This tourist attraction listed as World Heritage is literally a stone throw away from Fitzroy Resort.
Let the whole family enjoy the view of marine life through fun activities like snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, or simply observing from your glass-bottom boats!
Other great jump-off points to reach the reef are Cairns, Whitsundays, or Port Douglas!
Kuranda Scenic Railway
If you want some blast from the past, hop on board the century-old carriages of the Kuranda Scenic Railway! This train system will weave you through the rainforest and nearby mountains. The last stop is the charming village of Kuranda where the kids can buy souvenirs and try out delectable delicacies.
The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is also located in this little town! Don’t forget to make a side trip to the largest butterfly aviary in all of the southern hemisphere. Be enchanted by the colourful wings and graceful flights of thousands of species of butterflies that await you at the sanctuary.
It’s also a breeding ground that nurses over 4000 caterpillars and chrysalises, so your kids will certainly learn a thing or two about the life cycle of the butterflies.
