Early life

Kobe Bean Bryant, was born on the 23rd of August, 1978, in Philadelphia. His father Joe Bryant was a former basketball player and a member of the NBA (National Basketball Association). His mother Pamela Cox Bryant was also the sister of John Chubby Cox, who was also an NBA player.

Interestingly, his name was inspired from a Japanese menu that listed a beef with the name “Kobe”. Also, “Bean” (his middle name) has been inspired from his father’s name, which was “Jellybean”.

Merely at the age of 3, he started pursuing basketball. He was a die hard fan of the Lakers. Few years later, his family shifted to Italy, after his father retired from the NBA. His father wanted to play professional basketball.

Few years later, his family shifted to Reggio Calabria, then to Pistoia and finally to Reggio Emilia. With the changing environment, Kobe became fluent at Italian.

In Reggio Emilia, he took basketball seriously and started pursuing it as a serious profession. His grandfather was very supportive in his journey and used to mail him videos of NBA players. At the age of 13, Kobe returned back to Philadelphia with his family.

Personal life

A 20 year old and already popular, Kobe Bryant met a 17 year old Vanessa Bryant and fell in love with her at the very first sight. The couple was so madly in love that they exchanged rings just eight months after they started dating and couldn’t wait to get married. Just after Vanessa turned 18, they got hitched.

They had four children, Gianna Bryant, Natalia Diamante Bryant, Bianka Bella Bryant and Capri Kobe Bryant. His daughter Gianna and him died in a helicopter crash on the 26 January, 2020. They were in a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter, with some friends and family, when due to heavy fog and rain, it started flowing too low to be traced by the radars and eventually lost control and crashed.

This extremely talented young man, who shall always remain in the hearts of basketball lovers and every heart that dreams to play professional basketball someday, was also a hunk that ruled the hearts of many women. He was 1.98 meters tall and weighed 96 kilos.

Career

Soon after Kobe Bryant became a part of the Lakers, he with his team conquered three consecutive NBA championships, from the year 2000 to 2002. In the year 2003, a hotel clerk accused Kobe Bryant of sexual assault. Well, when taken to court, the clerk refused to testify and therefore the accusation was dropped after the two settled the matter outside the court.

Post the entire scandal, Kobe went on record to make a public apology stating that he did have an intercourse with the lady, but it wasn’t a forced one, rather it was consensual. In the year 2004, after the defeat of Lakers, Kobe was appointed as the new cornerstone of the team. In his leadership, the team performed extremely well in the year 2005-2007. 

During the 2006-2007 championship, he scored the second highest score ever with 81 points. He was the second highest scorer after Wilt Chamberlain, who in 1962 scored 100 points.

Both, in 2009 and 2010, he led his team and was presented with the title of NBA finals MVP. At the age of 34, he accidentally suffered from a tear in the Achilles tendon and couldn’t perform post it. He even suffered from injuries in the shoulder and knee and therefore had to retire in the year 2016.

He titled himself with the name “Black Mamba”, which became extremely popular amongst his fans. During the Summer Olympics of 2008 and 2012, he played for the US national team and bagged 2 golds. He featured in a short film in the year 2017, called “Dear Basketball”, that was presented with the Academy Award for the “best short film”, in the year 2018.

Kobe Bryant has been an NBA champion five times in his career of 20 years (2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010). He has been a 2 times winner of the NBA finals NVP (2009, 2010). He was awarded as the NBA Most Valuable Player in the year 2008.

He also became the scoring champion and that too twice, in the year 2006 and 2007. He had the honour of being the NBA all star and guess what! 18 times (1998, 2000 to 2016). He was the NBA All-Star Game MVP, four times in 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2011. He was selected to the NBA team 15 times. He had even been the winner of 2x Best NBA Player ESPY Award.
